Millersville University is taking a big step to help students who struggle to afford food by setting up a new SNAP Station. This special spot has just opened up near the Student Affairs Suite, in the upper seating area of the Galley inside the Student Memorial Center.

Its main goal is to make more students aware of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and show them how to get these benefits.
"So many of our students are in need, and many of our students qualify for SNAP benefits but don’t know it," says Dr. Mary Beth Williams, the vice president for Student Affairs at Millersville University.

She adds that this initiative, which the PA Hunger Free Campus Grant supports, is not just about giving food right now but also about pointing students towards resources that can help them in the long run.

Here's what the SNAP Station offers:

  • Information on SNAP Benefits: Students can find out if they're eligible, learn how to apply, and understand what the benefits include.
  • Basic Needs Resources: There's information available on various supports both on campus and in the local community. This includes help from the Millersville Basic Needs Intern who guides students through these resources.
  • Free Food Distribution Info: Details on local food banks, pantries, and organizations that offer free food help are available.
  • PA 211 Resources: Students can access various services, including housing help, healthcare, and mental health support.
  • Immediate Food and Water Access: For those in immediate need, the station provides essential food and water.

Any student at Millersville University facing difficulties in affording food is welcome to use the SNAP Station. The university is partnering with local groups, especially the HUB, which manages the Campus Cupboard and offers free meals to students weekly.

"We are interested in making the SNAP Station what the students need it to be to support their needs. We welcome input as we launch this project and maintain the station," Dr. Williams notes.

The creation of the SNAP Station is a part of Millersville University's dedication to fighting student food insecurity. The university is committed to ensuring students have the support they need for both their academic studies and personal growth.

If you are a student in a different university struggling with food security, ask and explore whether or not your university offers the same programs.

Nonetheless, a simple online search can help you understand eligibility to receive SNAP benefits. Check out this article for more information: SNAP Benefits and Food Security for College Student.
