Grocery Prices: What’s Getting Cheaper and What’s Still Going Up

U.S. shoppers are finally seeing some relief at the grocery store, but the news is a mixed bag. While prices for some kitchen staples are finally dropping after years of high inflation, other everyday items continue to rise.

According to the latest government data from January 2026, overall inflation is beginning to cool down.

It rose 2.4% over the past year, which is a slight improvement from the 2.7% seen in December.

While lower gas prices and slower rent increases have helped the economy overall, most Americans are still focused on the cost of their weekly grocery shopping.

The Good News: Prices Are Dropping on These Items

Some items that were once very expensive are finally becoming more affordable:

  • Eggs: After record-high prices in 2024 caused by bird flu and supply chain issues, egg prices have dropped significantly. In many areas, they are now close to what they cost before the pandemic.
  • Milk and Dairy: Prices for milk and cheese are beginning to stabilize because there is a better supply and the cost of cow feed has gone down.
  • Bread and Bakery Goods: While still more expensive than they were a few years ago, the price of bread is no longer rising as fast. Some stores are even lowering prices to stay competitive.

The Bad News: These Items are Still Expensive

Despite the relief in the dairy aisle, other products continue to strain household budgets:

  • Coffee: This is the most noticeable price hike for many. Bad weather in countries like Brazil and Colombia, along with shipping delays, has kept coffee prices high.
  • Fresh Produce: The cost of fruits and vegetables—especially berries and leafy greens—remains unpredictable due to seasonal changes and high transportation costs.
  • Meat: Beef and pork prices stay high. This is largely due to ongoing droughts in cattle-raising regions and the high cost of feed.

Why is this happening?

Economists explain that the difference comes down to supply and demand. For products like eggs, farmers were able to bounce back and increase production, which lowered prices.

However, products like coffee and meat are affected by "global" factors. This means things like bad weather in other countries or international trade issues keep those prices high, and it is harder for local grocery stores to control those costs.

Tips for Saving Money

To help manage these uneven prices, experts suggest a few simple strategies:

  1. Shop Around: Compare prices between big supermarkets and discount stores.
  2. Buy in Season: Fruits and vegetables are much cheaper (and fresher) when they are bought during their natural growing season.
  3. Use Rewards: Take advantage of store loyalty programs and coupons to shave a few dollars off your total.

While it is encouraging to see some prices come down, the cost of putting food on the table remains a concern for many families. For now, the best strategy is to stay flexible and keep a close eye on those changing price tags.
